How do I use the extension? (Including keyboard shortcuts)

Once Unbar is enabled in Safari > Settings > Extensions, open any page with a video and click the Unbar icon in the toolbar — or press Option + Z. There is no site list to manage and nothing to approve before you start: Unbar reads the page only at the moment you use it, on the tab you’re watching.

Which platforms are supported?

Unbar works on macOS (12.4+) with Safari 15.5 or later. It is optimized for the latest Safari browser to provide the best viewing experience on your Mac.

Does Unbar work on all video sites?

Accepted Answer

Almost — but we cannot promise every one. Unbar is no longer tied to a list of sites, so opening a video in Safari and clicking once usually fills the screen. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Apple TV, FOX One, and YouTube are the services Unbar is built for. Some players build their video in a way Unbar cannot reach, and some DRM-protected players have limited support. If a site does not work for you, email us and we will take a look.

Why does Safari sometimes ask to allow another site?

On a few sites, after you use Unbar, Safari may offer to always allow access to an origin the page embeds in a frame — for example on Hulu, including the Hulu tab inside Disney+. Unbar never asks for this and does not use it: it reads only the top frame of the tab you invoked it on. You can decline and Unbar works exactly the same. If you would rather not be asked again, choose “Always Allow on This Website” — Safari remembers it, and Unbar still reads only that top frame.

Why is “unbar.timeblimp.studio” listed in Unbar's permissions?

That is Unbar's own website, not a site you watch video on, and Unbar never reads it — Safari keeps it set to “Ask”, which grants nothing. It is declared so that Unbar has an entry under Safari > Settings > Websites. Without one, Safari has nowhere to record your answer when it asks whether to allow a site, so it would ask again on every visit. It is only needed on macOS 26 and earlier, where Safari still asks; it may be removed once that no longer comes up.

How do I enable or disable the extension?

Open Safari, go to Settings > Extensions, and toggle Unbar on or off.

Can I turn off the + / − step zoom?

Accepted Answer

Step zoom is on by default — there is nothing to switch on. If you prefer the plain one-click toggle, open Safari > Settings > Extensions, select Unbar, click Settings, and uncheck “Enable +/− step zoom adjustment”. The toolbar button and Option + Z then simply toggle the default full-screen zoom.

Question 8

The extension isn't working on a specific site. What should I do?

Accepted Answer

If the extension doesn't respond, try refreshing the page (Command + R). Once the page has reloaded, activate the extension again (or press Option + Z) to re-apply the cinematic mode.
